Author of Richter Biography dies at 79

Author of Richter Biography dies at 79

Following a long period of suffering from illness British conductor, and author of the János Richter biography, 79 year old Christopher Fifield has passed away. The tragic news was relayed to the management of the Győr Phil by his son, Andy Fifield. The reputable music historian and our orchestra are connected through the grand heritage of János Richter. As commonly known, the Hungarian edition of Mr. Fifield's Richter biography was published in 2022 under the supervision of GYPO. The book filled a gap in Hungarian music history with its content and in-depth information on the world famous conductor's life. The significant book, translated by Boldizsár Fejérvári, digs deep into a great artist's life and achievements that made an inspiring impact on the best singers, composers, and instrumentalists of his time.

GYPO Violinist Ágnes Kisházy awarded on the Day of Hungarian Culture

GYPO Violinist Ágnes Kisházy awarded on the Day of Hungarian Culture

The Day of Hungarian Culture is celebrated every year on January 22 when poet Ferenc Kölcsey had signed his name under his poem in 1823 on which the Hungarian national anthem is based. Since 1989 on this notable day the local government of Győr traditionally recognizes some of those contributing to the city's cultural life. In the assembly room of the City Hall mayor Bence Péter cordially greeted the invited guest to be awarded this year. Much to our delight, violinist of the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra, Ágnes Kisházy was selected this year to receive an award for her decades-long cultural contributions.

As commonly became known after the city council's general assembly back in September 24, 2024, in order to conform with international and domestic trends, cultural and other presentations from now on are all to be coordinated by Győr Project Ltd . Consequently, functions and services of organizational body "Győr Arts and Festival Center" have become obsolete thus for more efficient functioning it merges into the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra.

Change in our 2024/25 Flesch series

Change in our 2024/25 Flesch series

Our chamber music series dubbed "Musical Eras" has successfully been launched on December 1, 2024, overseen by GYPO's artistic director, Kálmán Berkes. This set of performances features the talented artists of our great city's orchestra. Some things do not change as it is still the University Concert Hall (former synagogue) that houses these Sunday 4pm afternoon events. The orchestra’s musicians along with Mr. Berkes have again carefully selected worthy pieces of the chamber music repertoire also including rarely performed works

The Martin Sieghart tour is under way

The Martin Sieghart tour is under way

Historically significant pieces of music are on offer during a short, six concerts/six locations series led by Austrian conductor Martin Sieghart that is decidedly one of the highlights of GYPO's fall season. It is a great honor that the Maestro returns to us as an aftermath of his conducting masterclass held at Richter Hall back in June this year. Our fruitful cooperation with this internationally well-known and recognized conductor goes back long years by now.
